The first bike, and the only one they need until pedals.

For toddlers finding their feet, and for children who tried a bike too early and went off the idea. No pedals, no gears and nothing to learn but balance, so the hardest part of riding is out of the way before pedals ever appear.

Will it fit?

Height 80–100cm
Inside leg from 30cm
Ages 18 months – 4
Weight 3.9kg

At 3.9kg a toddler can pick the Myndie up, turn it round and carry it back to where they dropped it. That sounds like a small thing and it is not. A bike a child cannot manage on their own is a bike they wait for you to fetch, and the ones that get ridden are the ones they can handle themselves.

What you get

  • 6061 aluminium frame and forks, 3.9kg. Alloy rather than the steel or heavy plastic used on most first bikes, which is where the weight saving comes from. Light enough to lift into a boot with one hand.
  • Takes 12in and 14in wheels. One frame covers the whole span from first steps to their first pedal bike. Fit the bigger wheels when they grow rather than buying a second balance bike.
  • No pedals, no gears, no brakes. Feet do the stopping. That is a design decision rather than a saving: there is nothing between a toddler and the one thing they are here to learn.
  • Puncture-proof 12in tyres. They will never go flat and never need pumping up, which matters on a bike that lives in the shed and gets ridden on ten minutes’ notice.
  • Adjustable saddle and wheel position. Both move as they grow, so the fit keeps up with them between wheel sizes.
  • Five colours. Letting them choose is worth doing. It is their first bike and they will remember it.

One frame, 18 months to four

Most brands sell a small balance bike and then a bigger one eighteen months later. We designed the Myndie around a single frame that takes either wheel size, so when they outgrow the 12in you fit a 14in wheel set rather than buying a second bike.

That is one frame built, boxed and shipped instead of two, and one bike in the shed instead of one in the shed and another in the loft. When they finish with it altogether, Shyre Trade Up takes it back towards their first pedal bike, and the warranty carries on with whoever rides it next.

If they will not get on it

Very common, and not a problem. Leave it in the hall where they can see it and say nothing. Most children get on it within a fortnight once it stops being something you want them to do.

When they do, set the saddle low enough that both feet sit flat on the ground, and let them walk it about before anything else. Scooting comes next, then a few steps of gliding with their feet up. Do not hold the saddle. They balance better without you than with you, and the moment they work that out is the moment it starts.

How to measure their inside leg

Stand them against a wall with their shoes on. Hold a hardback book between their legs, spine upwards, and raise it until it sits comfortably. Measure from the top of the spine to the floor.

This is more reliable than age. Children of the same age can differ by 15 to 20cm in height, and as much again in leg length.

Buying from us

Lifetime frame and fork warranty, and it transfers with the bike

If a frame or fork fails we replace the bike, not just the part. Everything else is covered for two years. Pass it on to a younger sibling or sell it when they outgrow it, and the cover goes with it.

90 days to change your mind

Take your time deciding whether it fits and whether they get on with it.

Shyre Trade Up — to 55% back

Send us a photograph when they outgrow it and we will agree a value towards their first pedal bike before you commit to anything.

We will match the price

If you find a comparable bike from another brand for less, send us the link and we will match it. It needs to be the same wheel size, with an alloy frame, new and in stock at a UK retailer.

It arrives 90% built

A basic tool kit is in the box and there are assembly videos to follow. There is very little to do on a Myndie, but if you would rather someone talked you through it, book a video call and we will go through it with you.

Named after the Long Mynd, the hill above Church Stretton where a good many Shropshire children work out what a bike can do.
