The bike that takes them further.

For confident riders ready to go further than they have before. Seven gears, brakes they can reach, and a frame light enough to manage on their own, so a long ride is still enjoyable at the far end of it.

Will it fit?

Height 130–150cm
Inside leg from 60cm
Ages 8–11
Weight 9.9kg ready to ride, with pedals and kickstand

A long ride is where a bike shows what it is made of. At 9.9kg ready to ride, the Hopton 24in stays easy to handle when they are tired, which is the point at which a heavier bike starts to feel like hard work. Sealed bearings, double-wall rims and Shimano gearing are there so it goes on doing that through winter school runs and weekend miles, rather than needing sorting out every few weeks.

What you get

  • 6061 aluminium frame and forks, 9.9kg ready to ride. Light for a geared 24in bike, and weighed with the pedals and kickstand on, so it is the figure that actually arrives. They will notice it on every hill and at the end of every long ride.
  • Shimano 7-speed drivetrain. A Tourney TY300 rear mech, a 32-tooth chainring and a 14 to 28 freewheel. Low enough at one end to stay seated on a climb, and enough at the other to hold a proper pace on the flat.
  • Shyre Junior Fit. Shorter cranks than an adult bike, a narrower bar and a junior saddle. This is the size at which most brands stop bothering and start selling a shrunken adult frame instead.
  • Tektro V-brakes with short-reach levers. The lever blade sits closer to the bar, so a smaller hand can get right round it and pull hard enough to stop properly.
  • Double-wall alloy rims and a sealed-bearing bottom bracket. Double-wall rims stay true through kerb drops far better than single-wall, and sealed bearings keep grit and winter road salt out of the moving parts. This is where a bike either lasts or starts creaking.
  • 250mm micro-adjust seatpost with a quick-release clamp. Raise the saddle a few millimetres at a time as they grow, without going to find a tool.
  • Multi-terrain tyres and a kickstand. Happy on roads, parks and gravel paths, and somewhere to stand it at the end of a ride.

Building up to longer rides

Distance comes more easily than most parents expect, as long as there is something at the end of it. A café, a river, a castle, somewhere they wanted to get to. A twenty-mile ride with a stop in the middle is far easier than ten miles round in a circle.

Let them set the pace on the way out and keep something in reserve for the way home. And check the saddle height every couple of months at this age, because they grow faster than they will tell you.

How to measure their inside leg

Stand them against a wall with their shoes on. Hold a hardback book between their legs, spine upwards, and raise it until it sits comfortably. Measure from the top of the spine to the floor.

This is more reliable than age. Children of the same age can differ by 15 to 20cm in height, and as much again in leg length.

Buying from us

Lifetime frame and fork warranty, and it transfers with the bike

If a frame or fork fails we replace the bike, not just the part. Everything else is covered for two years. Pass it on to a younger sibling or sell it when they outgrow it, and the cover goes with it.

90 days to change your mind

Take your time deciding whether it fits and whether they get on with it.

Shyre Trade Up — to 55% back

Send us a photograph when they outgrow it and we will agree a value towards their next bike before you commit to anything.

We will match the price

If you find a comparable bike from another brand for less, send us the link and we will match it. It needs to be the same wheel size, with an alloy frame and equivalent brakes and gearing, new and in stock at a UK retailer.

It arrives 90% built

A basic tool kit is in the box and there are assembly videos to follow. If you would rather someone talked you through it, book a video call and we will go through it with you. If you would rather not do it at all, there is little enough left that most local bike shops will finish it off for a small charge.

Named after Hopton Woods in south Shropshire, a family favourite for our weekend rides. Forestry England call it the home of mountain biking in Shropshire, and its downhill tracks have been a regional race venue for years.
